Its main competition on price are the cheaper Mazda 6 and Subura Legacy (called Liberty 205i Premium in Aust). Whereas the Europeans like the BMW 318i, Audi A4 2.0 and Mercedes C180 are about US$8k more with similar equipment levels.I thought you might be interested in why the TSX was best for me.

The TSX has the most powerful engine at 140KW/200HP with the closest rivals being the 2 Japanese at around 120KW and the 3 Germans ranging 96KW to 105KW. On the road you can really feel the difference. Provided you are prepared to rev the TSX, it drives like a sports car. Having stronger pulling power& highway over-taking strength compared to the other cars. The Mazda 6 is probably the closest to the TSX. An added benefit of the TSX is the short shift manual gearbox - its just so much fun. When on winding roads, the BMW appears to have the best chassis, then followed closely by the TSX.
The Subura and Mazda weren't bad, just not as engaging as the BMW or TSX. Not able to comment on the Mercedes and Audi as the dealers wouldn't allow me to take a long test drive on secondary/ country roads. In terms of ride, it is a close call between the BMW and TSX. The latter a little stiffer in the suspension but more composed when pushed hard into a tight corner. The Subura was also excellent with its AWD system. Interior design is really subjective as they all are good looking. Perhaps, the Audi has the best 'quality' feel. Seating was also best in the Audi followed by the BMW & TSX.
The Mazda was by far the worst. Little lumbar support and poor rear seat design. The standard audio system sounded best in the Mazda (being Bose), followed by TSX and Mercedes. The BMW standard unit was awful. Another selection criteria were 'whole of life' costs. According to official statistics, the TSX & BMW have the best fuel economy, followed by Mazda. The BMW & Mercedes shared the lowest projected depreciation cost followed equally by the TSX and Subura. However, not sure whether this will hold true for BMW & Mercedes over the longer term for reasons described below. In terms of insurance premium, the Mazda & Subura were best. Overall, the TSX probably would come out on top over a 3 year/ 60,000km period. Apart for the initial price differentia, it was becoming increasingly difficult to pick between the BMW and TSX. Now for the crucial finding. Surprisingly, the BMW & Mercedes quality control just didn't appear to match Audi or the Japanese. There were uneven gaps in panel fit and the leading lines didn't always align.I later learnt that the smaller 4 cylinder models from BMW and Mercedes were sourced from South Africa for the Australian market. In my book, South African quality isn't German nor anywhere near Japanese. With some diublts looming over build quality (and weak engine), the BMW was dropped off my shopping list. In short, had the BMW318i been 'made in germany', the decision between it and the TSX would have come down to apperance as both are for driving enthusiast. However, in selected the TSX there is a sacrifice. The delivery time in Australia for a 2004 build TSX is currently 6 weeks.
